Chemical Peels After Summer: Helping to Refresh Dull, Uneven Skin
I love summer however increased sun exposure, heat, travel and changes to your usual skincare routine can sometimes leave your skin feeling a little drier, duller or more uneven than usual.
A chemical peel is one of my favourite post-summer treatments to help reset the skin. It can be a great way to gently refresh the complexion and leave the skin looking brighter, smoother and more even.
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel involves applying a carefully selected solution to the skin to encourage controlled exfoliation.
Depending on the type and strength of peel used, this can help remove dull surface skin cells and encourage skin renewal.
Chemical peels can be used to help with concerns including:
Uneven skin tone
Dull or tired-looking skin
Rough or uneven texture
Pigmentation
Congestion and blemish-prone skin
Fine lines
At Glow with Dr Hazel, in Manchester, chemical peels are tailored to your individual skin type and concerns, using carefully selected blends of acids including glycolic, lactic, salicylic and kojic acid.
The most appropriate peel will depend on your skin, current skincare routine and what you are hoping to improve.
Why might skin feel different after summer?
Sun exposure can contribute to pigmentation, dryness and changes in skin texture. Even when you are careful with SPF, spending more time outdoors can still affect the skin.
Hot weather, air conditioning, swimming and changes to your normal routine can also leave the skin feeling dehydrated or less balanced.
This is why I particularly like chemical peels as a post-summer treatment. They can help reset the skin after the warmer months and improve the appearance of dullness, uneven texture and tone, leaving the complexion looking fresher, brighter and smoother.
Aftercare is just as important as the treatment
Chemical peels can temporarily make the skin more sensitive, so following the correct aftercare is essential.
Depending on the peel, you may experience some redness, dryness, sensitivity and peeling afterwards.
Sun protection is particularly important while the skin is recovering. I always advise being extra careful with sun exposure and using a broad-spectrum SPF consistently during the following two weeks.
Your usual active skincare products may also need to be paused temporarily. You will be given personalised aftercare advice depending on the treatment used.
Is a chemical peel suitable for everyone?
Not necessarily.
Different peels contain different combinations of acids and are designed to target different skin concerns, which is why treatment should always be selected according to your individual skin.
A consultation beforehand allows us to discuss your medical history, current skincare routine, previous treatments and the concerns you would like to address.
There are also situations where a chemical peel may not be appropriate, and risks and possible side effects should always be discussed before treatment.
