What Happens During Your First Consultation?
One of the most common things patients say to me before their first consultation is:
“I don’t even know where to start”
And honestly, that’s completely normal.
For many people, booking an aesthetic consultation can feel intimidating, especially if you’re new to treatments or worried about looking unnatural, being judged or feeling pressured into something you’re unsure about.
Social media often makes aesthetics look very quick and straightforward. A treatment is shown, a result appears instantly and very little attention is given to the conversations, assessments and decision-making that happen beforehand.
In reality, a good consultation should feel calm, collaborative and informative. It should never feel rushed or transactional.
Often, patients arrive convinced they need a particular treatment because they’ve seen it online or heard about it from friends. But once we step back and assess the bigger picture, the most appropriate approach can sometimes look very different.
For example, someone may feel they need filler because they feel tired or notice changes in their face over time. But after assessment, the issue may actually relate more to skin quality, dehydration, collagen loss or lifestyle factors affecting the skin overall. In those situations, focusing on collagen-supporting treatments, skincare or overall skin health may create a softer and more natural-looking result long term.
That’s why consultations matter so much. They create space for proper assessment, honest conversations and realistic expectations.
During your consultation at Glow with Dr Hazel in Manchester, we’ll talk through your medical history, medications, previous treatments, skincare routine, lifestyle factors and what is genuinely bothering you. I’ll assess your skin and facial anatomy carefully, then explain which treatments may or may not be suitable for you.
As a GP, I approach aesthetics very much through the lens of long-term skin health and patient wellbeing. I want patients to feel informed and reassured, not overwhelmed or pressured.
A good consultation should leave you feeling clearer about your options, more confident in your understanding and comfortable asking questions.
Because there really are no “silly” questions during a consultation.
Understanding the treatment, the risks, the aftercare and whether something is genuinely right for you is incredibly important. Ultimately, good aesthetic medicine is not just about treatments themselves. It’s about trust, communication, safety and making thoughtful decisions together.
